Actress Nandita Das directs a film on Gujarat riots

Nandita Das, the popular actress and human rights advocate, showed “Firaaq,” her first film as director, at the Toronto Film Festival. It is set during the aftermath of the Gujarat riots in 2002. Joan Dupont in the International Herald Tribune:

Das, now 38, is a ravishing, very serious and very funny woman. She has been honored as a political rights activist and has served on the Cannes jury. Her debut as director made a splash at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado last month, where Salman Rushdie introduced the film. “Firaaq,” for all the anger and anguish it portrays, is a surprisingly fresh film, composed around a cluster of stories.

An Urdu word that means both separation and quest, “Firaaq” is set during the aftermath of the Gujarat Province riots in 2002, when Hindus and Muslims clashed: women were raped, and families slaughtered in a stunning replay of the partition. The film was made in Urdu, Gujarati and English. The director brings intensity to her characters’ plight, with sharp instinct for rooting out their hidden fears.

    Dear Nanditaji

Although I m very much fan of your acting, I m very much disturbed with your movie on Gujarat riots. I congratulate u for awards u hav won but worry that awards include award rom our enemy country also. I dont know what comment I should make when u have been awarded by our enemy country for ur movie events u have picturised. And may i inform u that Mr. Nawaz Sharif hav been warned by that country for life imprisionment for telling the truth?

I dont mind if u say something which is a total truth. But I m afraid what u believe to be truth is not the truth. Before I write anything else, let me clarify that I m not at any time associated with any Political or social organisation and I very much respect Muslims of Gujarat and this country. I did wish Mr. Kalam be reappointed as our president but so called secularists didnt want that.

I dont know why people like u like to touch Gujarat and so called communalism only. Perhaps it earns publicity 4 u and money too. And if u touch subject like Nandigram, Mumbai & outsiders living in Mumbai (MNS-Raj Thakarey), Delhi Sikh killings, Kashmiri Pandit problems and so on, either u dont earn fame and money or perhaps u know u cant stay in Mumbai or u cant be termed as secularists.

Surely it is wise decision that if u criticise Gujarat riots u just get benifits and benifits.

Can u let me know ur thought on following facts?

Gujarat was voting exactly in same pattern as our country was up to 1985. I mean Gujarat voted for congress and Janta Party as the entire country voted. What might be the reason for Gujarati people being most communal people of this country- We have CM who is the biggest terrorist of this country as Rajiv Shukla of Congress said.

Gujarat has thousands of villages with less than 20 % minority with same administration of Narendra Modi, Same Gujarat Police, same VHP and Bajrang dal etc. working there and yet riots took place in such thousands of villages. Why?

No riots took place in Gujarat during last 7 years although same so called hitlor is continuing CM of Gujarat. Is it becuase of peole like u?

U belong to a state who elects a polotical party whose leaders have their first faith in China and then Russia and lastly India. They dont allow this country to take decisions which r in interest of this country. R U feeling great about this or ashamed?

Can I expect u to be courageous enough to prepare agenuine movie even on Nandigram riots and sikh riots?

I wish u atleast talk to people of Gujarat b4 make a moviw on subject concerning our state. And we dont consider Mallika Sarabhai a Gujarati. She can go with anybody who is anti Gujarat.

If u atleast dare to reply, I will be pleased that I am fan of your acting (real acting, not acting of making movie)

    With no regards 4 u
