No laughing matter: Pakistani funny man is hounded out of Mumbai

At the Jaipur Literature Festival, young Pakistani writers (Mohammed Hanif, Nadeem Aslam, Daniyal Mueenuddin) are making  waves as they speak before a packed out crowd. But in ’cosmopolitan’ Mumbai declare a ban on all things Pakistani, including stand-up comedians, cricketers and even books. In The National, Jalees Andrabi reports on the deportation of  a funny man.

The Pakistani comedian Shakeel Siddiqui was forcibly removed from a television studio in Mumbai this week by members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a hardline Hindu group, and was told to leave India immediately.

“We got to know that Shakeel was shooting for a TV show so we decided to raid the place. We took him out of the set and told the producers not to hire any Pakistanis. We will not allow films starring Pakistani actors or singers in Maharashtra,’’ Amey Khopkar, the MNS leader, told reporters after Mr Siddiqui was bundled into a vehicle bound for the Mumbai airport.

Coming just weeks after a ban on books by Pakistani authors in the state of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai, it is another sign that India and Pakistan’s cultural relations have become the latest victim of the November Mumbai terrorist attacks.

This is the funniest Pakistani incident I’ve ever seen. Pakistani Man can’t figure out how this new fangled electric door technology works. Decides to charge through. Nearly slices head off. VIDEO
