Scientists to clone Pashmina goat

pashmina-goatScientists in India will clone the famous Pashmina goat.  A six-member team of scientists from the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal in Punjab, and the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Jammu will use somatic cells from the ear of a donor goat to create the clone. The same team had succeeded in cloning a buffalo on February 6 but the calf died a week later.

From Rediff:

“Though the buffalo calf died in one week, we now know that the technique itself is correct and successful,” said Riaz Ahmed Shah, who was one among the team of six scientists who cloned the world’s first ever buffalo. More here:

Pashmina is a special breed of goat in the high altitudes of the Himalayas. The goat sheds its winter coat every spring. Pashmina wool — known for its softness and warmth — is made with the fur of these goats. One shawl requires about 24 ounces of wool, the annual output of three to four goats.
